Landgard – digitally ahead of its time with Composable Commerce

The vision for e-commerce was to use the new myLandgard.de platform to create a “digital twin” for Landgard’s specialist trade and stationary business. This means that Landgard customers will be able to access all services from the specialist trade as well as the formats from the stationary business – Landgard Cash&Carry, Bloomways, Hortiways and Trendways – digitally.

Landgard is Germany’s leading marketing organization in horticulture. The company is wholly owned by the growers who supply Landgard with potted plants, cut flowers, fruit and vegetables 365 days a year. These goods are supplied to specialist wholesalers and retailers as well as chain stores – from DIY stores to supermarkets. More than 40 individual operating companies make up the Landgard Group.

THE TASK

ALL BUSINESS AREAS POOLED ON ONE PLATFORM

Landgard was faced with the challenge of standardizing its very heterogeneous IT landscape in order to exploit synergy effects on the one hand and to simplify collaboration between the individual companies on the other.

To achieve this, Landgard wanted to map several business areas via a standardized e-commerce platform. This includes the processing of B2B business on the one hand and the digitalization of order fairs, which were previously always held physically, on the other. Not least due to coronavirus and the associated restrictions, these trade fairs were no longer possible in their original form for a long time. Landgard therefore wanted to make the shopping experience as similar as possible while also benefiting from the automated processing of orders.

OUR SOLUTION

Standardized B2B processes for greater productivity

Landgard solved these extremely complex requirements with the Commerce Cloud from SAP. With this technology and the implementation by Medienwerft, Landgard can standardize its B2B processes and gradually expand them further thanks to the multi-channel and multi-shop approach.

Further stores will be migrated to the platform in the future, and the homogenization of data will also enable the stores to easily offer product ranges from independent individual companies in other stores.

THE CHALLENGE

MAXIMUM COMPLEXITIES OF DATA VARIATIONS

The biggest challenge in this project was to map the different product ranges in one platform. Not only is the product data varied, but the products come from different ERP systems and have completely separate and independent price and freight cost calculations. The designed data model must therefore be able to handle the greatest possible variance and still serve standardized business logics within the platform. In the end, the original ERP systems must also be served from the business processes.

A highly exciting project with a team of different partners. Based on a further developed system landscape, the complex business processes for the wholesale plant trade were defined, implemented and made even more scalable in line with user requirements.

HEADLESS STOREFRONT

AGILE APPROACH

Landgard opted for a future-proof SAP Composable Storefront for the front end. Thanks to the headless approach, the system adapts perfectly to Landgard’s various use cases and can be further developed and released independently of the backend.

As a result, the system is more agile and scalable in order to be able to map the most diverse requirements.

CONCLUSION

THE FOUNDATION HAS BEEN LAID – NOW IT’S TIME TO AIM HIGH

The myLandgard.de e-commerce platform is systemically based on a high-performance, cloud-based multi-shop solution that enables Landgard to implement new customer formats or product ranges quickly and easily using a “template approach” – regardless of whether it is a “white label webshop” or a new section in the Landgard webshop.

Digital customer services and multi-channeling are intended to retain and consolidate existing customers. The simple and quick overview of the entire range of products offered by specialist retailers and the respective formats also increases cross-selling potential.

By working with a team of different partners, complex business processes were transformed and digitalized in order to offer Landgard’s customers the best possible customer experience.

CUSTOMER FOCUS IS THE KEY TO SUCCESS

With the SAP Commerce Cloud, we have an e-commerce platform that perfectly supports our strategic goal – the “digital twin of brick-and-mortar retail”. This allows our customers to access our product range quickly and easily in our new web store and customize their delivery according to their wishes. As we continue to implement our e-commerce roadmap, our customers will be able to find the same items, information and services (PoS, fulfillment, payment, etc.) everywhere and combine them as they wish, regardless of whether they shop online or in-store.
