Why have we been nominated for the K5 Commerce Award?
We earned our nomination for the K5 Commerce Award for our successfully implemented project for our customer STARK Deutschland – a leading supplier in the building materials trade. Product search is a particular challenge in the building materials trade: Conventional search systems recognize shape or color, but often fail to reliably identify material properties – even though these are precisely what is decisive for the selection. The result is imprecise results and a time-consuming search process.
Our solution: an AI-supported image search that allows users to simply upload or directly take a product photo and receive suitable suggestions in a matter of seconds.

AI VISUAL SEARCH FOR STARK GERMANY
Intelligent product recognition with AI: STARK Germany relies on an AI-supported visual search that enables customers to select products quickly and precisely. The technology opens up completely new ways to make the selection process in the building materials trade more intuitive and efficient.
What is visual search?
With AI visual search, users can use images instead of keywords or filters when searching and receive suitable results based on visual similarity.
How does this work technically?

- AI recognizes visual features such as colors, shapes, textures and patterns.
- Using machine learning and image recognition, it compares the image with a database.
- The system then delivers results that come closest to these features.

In short: visual search makes searching more intuitive because people often have an image in their head – but not the words to go with it. In e-commerce in particular, this enables a much more user-friendly product search, as customers can find their desired product directly via a photo or a visual idea – faster, more targeted and often more emotional than via purely text-based filters.
