E-commerce middleware: Seamless communication between systems
E-commerce middleware – the mediation and translation between backend and frontend. A technology that optimally links the separate backend and frontend and significantly facilitates the integration of other systems.
E-commerce middleware – what is it?
E-commerce middleware serves as an intermediary and translator between the backend and frontend of a system. Examples of this are address data and orders that are transferred from the front end to the back end.
The aim is to use the e-commerce middleware to link the front end to the e-commerce back end so that other technologies, such as a CMS, can be easily connected in the future.
Middleware in use: HABA Play
Our experts recently developed middleware for the HABA Familygroup. This solution enabled a quick and seamless integration of the existing storefront onto the new Emporix platform. The key benefit: valuable development time was saved as the existing storefront remained unchanged and continued to be based on Spartacus while the commerce system was migrated to the new Emporix platform.
What happens during implementation?
Our team developed the e-commerce middleware based on the Alokai framework and extended it considerably to create a “backend for frontend” architecture. The challenge was that the integration had to be designed in such a way that the switch between existing and new interfaces worked seamlessly. The system was adapted so that both customer-specific and system-specific adjustments could be made using simple concepts and workflows.
The result: the various extensions were bundled using the middleware and efficiently connected to the storefront.
Our solution: „Lean Commerce Stack“
For us, lean commerce means integrating systems with each other in such a way that the customer can adapt their solutions to the market situation at any time without having to rebuild the entire structure every time – we operate true composable commerce.
Before: The communication between the frontend and backend was very complex and therefore time-consuming. Several different APIs were required, as each third-party connection had to be individually connected to the storefront.
Now: With the “Lean Commerce Stack” (LCS) developed by Medienwerft, everything is connected via a single API. This not only reduces the workload for developers, but also makes third-party integrations much faster and easier to implement.
