SAP COMMERCE CLOUD WITH SAP SPARTACUS – AN OVERVIEW
SAP Spartacus is a web application that was specially designed as a headless storefront for the SAP Commerce Cloud. In this configuration, the back end (with data management and business logic) and the front end (external appearance, design) are technically separate from one another. Thanks to this decoupling, update cycles are quicker and independent from the back end, while the design is suitable for display on a wide variety of output devices. As a progressive web app (PWA), SAP Spartacus is based on libraries which are easy to expand. The use of Angular – one of the most popular JavaScript frameworks – enables optimised development over the long term.

To achieve consistent omnichannel management and an optimal customer experience, content, design and available functions should be the same across all sales channels and output devices. Future-proof solution: headless commerce. Here front and back end are decoupled. In short: SAP Spartacus is controlled via API interface from the content management system. This enables independent updates and developments for the front end without needing to adjust the back end. In this way, in just a short time inspiring shopping experiences can be provided, be that on websites, mobile devices, in social media, progressive web applications or additional platforms.
HEADLESS PROGRAMMING
GREATER INDEPENDENCE: LIBRARIES INSTEAD OF TEMPLATES
SAP describes the switch to Spartacus as a paradigm shift. This pertains firstly to the headless approach, but also the movement away from template use towards the concept of libraries. They are easy to expand, decoupled from the SAP Commerce Cloud and are updated every fortnight. This allows you to implement new versions of SAP Spartacus during ongoing operations – simply by using updated SAP Spartacus libraries. Should new functions become available in an updated library, your front end can simply be adjusted accordingly and the new functions integrated as required.
CONTENT DEVELOPMENT
FASTER, MORE FLEXIBLE AND FUTURE PROOF
An additional benefit: the separation of front and back end has led to the significant simplification of integrations. Front-end developers can work on their designs independent from the database. The specialist back-end developers create new functions centrally in the API, with just a small adjustment necessary in the front-end applications for the content to be integrated. This saves time and effort. The need to switch technologies is also reduced here, as the decoupled delivery of the content means the functions must not be newly developed each time the technology is replaced.
SAP SPARTACUS AND YOU – WHEN WILL IT START?
In future, SAP Spartacus will fully replace the SAP Accelerators. Currently however, the essential functionalities and libraries are not available for all requirements and business models. When is it sensible to start using and/or make the switch to Spartacus? Through close contact with the SAP Spartacus developer teams, we are able to make the best decisions for your business and platforms.
THE MOST IMPORTANT QUESTIONS ABOUT SAP SPARTACUS
Spartacus is a headless storefront for SAP Commerce. The PWA-enabled (progressive web app) single page application Spartacus is based on libraries which can be easily expanded and decoupled from the SAP Commerce Cloud. Spartacus has been implemented using JavaScript (more accurately: TypeScript) and Angular to ensure it is well equipped for the future. Since front end and back end are decoupled, independent release and/or update cycles can be selected to ensure that Spartacus can be released as often as possible, entirely independent of the back end. For you as client, this means that thanks to the headless approach, you benefit from a quicker time to market for new features and functions in the storefront.
For the SAP Commerce Cloud and Spartacus, we use the WCMS SmartEdit, which is already a part of SAP Commerce. SmartEdit includes complete support for the Spartacus JS storefront, and it enables the content of the storefront to be managed and personalised. The core of SmartEdit is the modern and commonly used JavaScript-framework Angular. As a WYSIWYG interface, SmartEdit offers you the option of quickly developing a site with various components, as the most important components are already supplied by SmartEdit. What’s more, Medienwerft can offer additional functionalities, which will cover your requirements and are perfectly suited to giving you a brand-appropriate presence on the web.
With the SAP Commerce Cloud and the headless storefront Spartacus, the gaps between responsive websites and mobile apps have been closed. As a single page application, Spartacus uses essential PWA features such as “add to home screen”. Using the headless concept, Spartacus decouples front from back end and accesses centralised back-end data via interfaces. In turn, this enables a comprehensive, content-driven shopping experience across all customer touch points and media.
Currently, not all requirements and functionalities have been implemented in all areas. However, in future, Spartacus will replace all SAP accelerators. SAP is striving to support all the functions of a progressive web app and is currently bringing out new releases on a fortnightly basis. The point at which it would be sensible and expedient for you to start using and/or switch to Spartacus depends on your requirements.
